Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning Demo Thoughts

My thoughts on the demo of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning (Reckoning) are that it is what I wanted Fable to be.

I like the third person view and fluid combat and in depth RPG elements. It's like Skyrim + Fable + God of War + Dragon Age = Reckoning. Traveling felt nice and didn't feel to slow or that I was walking forever with nothing to do. I can easily collect items on the run making gathering really easy. Not a lot of loading from what I can see and the loading there is it's fast and your not kept waiting for long.

Looting is the most notable change that needs a little getting use to. I found myself just taking all then looking in my inventory and equip the new weapon I just got. Now you can just check to see if it's better right then and there and equip real quick. Also putting stuff in a junk slot makes it nice to just go to vendor hit sell all junk and leave, something even MMOs lack.

Combat felt very nice and fluid while dodging and attacking. Melee weapons are fluid and all confided to one button but fast changing between weapons can create some cool combo moves. I'm also getting use to blocking/countering so I spend my time dodging but that will change after some time with the full game. Just seems easier to dodge than block/counter since you can get behind an enemy to end a fight quickly.

Accessing magic abilities quickly is welcomed but I'm still getting use to the switching. It is satisfying to shock someone and is very powerful from the start as a magic user. Takes time to use but is very effective. Can't wait to see what kind of magic attacks await later in the game.

Ranged weapons seemed to lack aiming like in Fable but I'm not a big ranged weapons guy so I'm not gonna complain. The auto aim for ranged weapons is very nice and doesn't hinder combat. I think I agree with decision to keep it like so because combat is fast your not going to have time to aim your self.

Dispelling mini game is pretty fun and a failed attempt can result in poisoning but the change in pace is nice and it still keeps the pace up. Lockpicking seemed really easy and required about 3 picks to crack a hard difficulty chest. Some slight graphical glitches show but are occasional. These are just first impressions and I hear this is an older build like most demos probably are so the released version will definitely have things like these fixed.

Conversations run like Bioware's which has become a staple in RPGs like this. The dialog is nice and talking to characters can become addicting hearing about everything going on and learning more about the world. I wanted to explore dialog more but I wanted to make best my 45 mins of time. Done very well and talking to people won't feel like a chore as most games have after a while.

Quests seem to have much more weight on them than most other games that are go here and collect this. One quest had me helping a man wandering in the woods. He says he's a wolf and I was skeptical. I was ready to fight him when I was done helping him in case he is just crazy or something. He has you go find this well which isn't there so after killing a few evil fairies I return to him. Then he explains its called the wandering well so it shifts position time to time (ugh). So I go back and I just about reach the fountain and it disappears so I try to run to were it is now only to have it come back. I wait for it to return and grab some water for him. Turns out he is a wolf and thanks me for helping him and transforms and goes on his way. You can say the quest is a no brainer and he's a wolf the whole time but I felt invested after I helped him. With the traveling objective and this mystery of a man/wolf makes me feel that I'm in a world with new rules and stories. I wanted to learn more about this wolf and if he will show up later now I helped him.

The rest of the quests I got had about the same type of thing going on but very much so different. Each quest has a story and is not just a go here do this blah blah blah crap. It tries to engaged you and offers some depth to the world making it a fascinating experience. You learn on the way while doing these quest about the world and its people who inhabit it. Racism and extreme religious views show up in the games dialog. It show you this world has the same issues we do in our day and age just in a different setting. You come across a stabbing of a immortal and no one seems to really care being surrounded by mortal beings.

This world is expansive and I can't wait to invest my time into this game. I'm excited for it and this is the RPG to really bring me in to play more than 100 hours in. I don't play Skyrim and Fallout but I play Mass Effect, Dragon Age (kinda), and Fable. I want a game that doesn't feel slow and it's the only reason I don't play Skyrim cause the combat is the same looking and nothing new. This game just appeals to me more than the Skyrim and Fallout series. I'm stingy when it comes to RPGs and this one I think will help turn the tide for me since I was disappointed in Fable 2 and Fable 3. This game might bring in people who play Dark Souls, God of War, Darksiders and others to really enjoy an RPG of this size.
